His book, the Vegetable Staticks: or an account of some statical experiments on the sap in vegetables: being an essay towards a natural history of vegetation was published in In this book Hales related experiments using his ‘pneumatic trough’ to collect gases given off by plants; he tried to discover how plants take up and expel water. Stephen Hales is considered the Father of Plant Physiology for the many experiments in the book,Vegetable Staticks; though Julius von Sachs unified the pieces of plant physiology and put them together as a discipline. His Lehrbuch der Botanik was the plant physiology bible of its time.
