    Linnaeus made few notes on the herbarium sheets. Sometimes he wrote the name of the genera (e. g. Ptelea) with big letters on the top of the sheet, but in most cases he only wrote a number on the bottom of the sheet which indicated the number of the species in his "Species Plantarum".Sometimes he also wrote the species name (e. g. The Linnaean Correspondence collection held by the Linnean Society contains over 4, letters from different correspondents.

The letters are an invaluable source of information for interpreting other parts of the collections. The earliest letters date from the s, when Linnaeus was still a relatively young man. This catalogue contains over coloured pictures of the plants in the herbarium.

Each of the original dried plants is shown alongside a recent picture of its modern day equivalent for comparison.
